Problem:

American society has little reverence or respect for individuals who are very young or very old. What is most confounding is that these are the individuals in society which should be coveted, enjoyed, and respected the most.

Context:

Youth posses an open-minded and un-tainted view on the workings of our culture and practices, this “naïve” view is refreshing and can lead to new and creative solutions to current issues. On the opposite end of the age spectrum the elderly have endured and contributed to society for decades, giving them a unique perspective. The National Center on Elder Abuse reports that every day in America thousands of elders are subjected to negligence as well as financial and physical abuse, yet this issue is seldom recognized as a pressing social problem.

Discussion:

The National Center on Elder Abuse reports that every day in America thousands of elders are subjected to negligence as well as financial and physical abuse, yet this issue is seldom recognized as a pressing social problem. It is alarming that such a large amount vulnerable elderly individuals, who have participated and help to build society for decades, can so easily be cast aside. This is an indication of the way seniors are devalued within our culture, and the serious implications of the lack of respect has tragic repercussions.

Solution:

In order to truly learn to appreciate the diverse ideas and attributes across the age spectrum, there will need to be some major systemic changes to the way our country affixes value on an individual. Instead of a persons money making ability being a top priority when it comes to their societal value, individuals must be recognized for the unique perspectives and skills they posses. To move forward as a society we must help individuals realize their intrinsic personal wealth, despite their age.
